Back in the day and earlier in the 20’s and 30’s, it was normal to have large families. Even in the 60’s and 70’s larger families were still pretty much all the rave. Look at the Wayans Family – Ten children was the norm. My family had four children which was considered small. Most families in the 20’s and 30’s needed large families to work the farms that are still popular today but have smaller families managing them and even some technology and machinery.
As we moved into the 70’s and beyond, families became smaller – one, two or three children and most family members would move away either from college or other opportunities and seldom come back home to build permanent homes.
Fast forward to 2000’s and we have many families that are still far apart. Some cultures such as Asian and Pakistani families still move in unison together until the daughters marry or sometimes the married couple may move in with their new family.
