HAVE YOU BEEN NAMED EXECUTOR OF YOUR LOVED ONE’S ESTATE? Part 14

k12527343Well, it looks like we’ve come to the end of this Journey. We sold the house and it’s time to close probate. Wohoo~~ It’s been an exhausting experience mentally and physically. I started exercising a little more just to take off the stress so that was actually a great result of this whole experience.

I’ve learned a few things that I’d like to share with you.

Should we have used an attorney? Well, maybe. However, I wasn’t particularly pleased with the attorney my uncle had so I didn’t utilize his services. We found a great attorney that we utilized for consulting. We didn’t actually pay him a retainer for his services so I didn’t push too much. He did call me back whenever I phoned him and he gave great advice. If you ever need a tax attorney in Seattle, I would definitely recommend Kevin Copp tax(425-889-7461). He was very pleasant and knowledgeable. He would definitely be worth whatever he charges.

There were one or two things I would have done better. I would have made sure I was present at the Estate Sale. The woman we used was horrible. If you can spend a little more time searching for a professional, I would take the time. We needed to get it done as quickly as possible however, if we were present what took place wouldn’t have. If you cannot be in attendance, have someone there for your benefit. It will make the world of difference.

The mail that your loved one receives as junk mail; don’t even bother opening the envelope. Simply write across the envelope “Deceased” and at the top “Return to Sender”. That will stop the junk mail from coming sooner and you won’t have to waste time opening the envelope, or using stamps. If they had a paid subscription to any magazine make sure you call because they may be due a refund that you can put into the Estate account.

Also, make sure you turn off the cable and return the equipment to Comcast or whoever because if not, the Estate will be liable for the equipment and that means you as Executor or Executrix will be financially responsible.

I hope you enjoyed the posts as I shared my experience and you learned something of value to keep in your back pocket to use yourself or pass on to a loved one.

Somehow being Executrix of my uncle’s Estate helped me get to know my uncle a little better and I hope I’ve done the job as Executrix as well as he expected me to.

Any comments, questions or concerns are welcome.
